Liverpool shoppers sign union’s Big Society protest card

CITY centre shoppers added their names to a massive protest card to mark the first anniversary of the Big Society launch.

Trade union Unite collected signatures in Lord Street on Saturday for the card, which it plans to deliver to Downing Street on July 19.

The anniversary card is part of Unite’s campaign against cuts to the voluntary sector in Liverpool.

When the Big Society project was launched, Liverpool was one of four pilot cities chosen – but in February, Liverpool Council leader Joe Anderson withdrew the council from the pilot project, branding it “a big con”.
