WIRRAL Council’s budget for next year could be in doubt even before it is set – after Lib-Dems accused Labour of failing to set up promised consultation.
Lib-Dem leader Tom Harney has warned the ruling Labour group they may have left it too late to adequately consult on their plans – in which case his party would not support their budget.
The stance came as the council was warned in the latest budget projection that the financial shortfall for next year has widened from £20 to £25m.
But last night Labour leader Steve Foulkes hit back, saying the Lib- Dems had “sat on their hands” to allow Labour to take control of the council – and also pledged “there will be full consultation” so anyone could have a say on budget. Labour took control of the council after the Liberal Democrats lost heavily at the last elections.
Labour then formed a minority administration after the Liberal Democrats decided to abstain over selection of a leader. This gave Labour a slight advantage over the Tories.
