Sefton Council must save another £38m by 2015, town hall bosses predict

JOBS and services at Sefton Council last night came under renewed threat as town hall bosses forecast the need for further savings totalling £38m by 2015.

The authority must make the savings by April 2015 to balance its books in line with reduced Government funding.

Council leader Peter Dowd said it was “impossible to say” how many more jobs could be lost.

The anticipated savings, to be made over three years, come just two months after the council passed swingeing £44m cuts.

Sefton could now outsource chunks of the council’s services to private firms and employee-led social enterprises.

It is also set to review multi-million contracts on council services it procures, such as social care, potentially returning to the market in search of better value.

The Daily Post understands that by April 1,400 posts will have been culled at the authority in three years.

In a broadside at the Government, Cllr Dowd accused ministers of refusing to listen to Sefton’s case for a fairer deal.
