Two Sefton schools opt for academy status despite objections from teachers and parents

A MERSEYSIDE school has opted for Academy status even though parents and staff voted overwhelmingly against the decision.

Deyes High will now join Maghull High in forging ahead with plans to break free from local authority control and become centrally funded by government in time for the new term in September.

In two separate governors’ meetings last week, both schools voted for Academy status – despite protests outside.

Deyes High had balloted parents and staff over the decision and they overwhelmingly voted against changing to an academy.

But their views were ignored as governors voted nine to six in favour for the change.

A letter posted on Deyes website from headteacher Ann Stahler and chair of Governors, John Graham, said: “This is an informed and considered decision and one we have not taken lightly. This decision has been made to strategically move Deyes High School forward.”

Maghull High did not ballot parents, and staff and governors voted to become an Academy.

Maghull High chair of governors, Cllr Geoff Howe, said: “It was an overwhelming decision from the governors and we look forward to a new opportunity in developing the school.

“It will give the school more freedom. Currently most of our services come from local authority which we pay for but under Academy status we will pay far less.”
