Row over Sefton Park Palm House opening hours extension

PLANS to extend the opening of Sefton Park’s Palm House into the early hours have been met with a flurry of objections from residents fearing noise and nuisance.

The Sefton Park Palm House Preservation Trust has applied to vary its operating hours to be able to open between 8am and 1.30am daily.

It claimed the move is necessary if it is to capitalise the income from a range of events it stages, including weddings, which currently must end just after midnight.

But, despite seeking just one hour’s extension, residents living close to Sefton Park say their peace and quiet is at risk.

Objections from Gledhill Residents Association are founded on fears “there is clear and open space between the Palm House and residential properties, and nothing to absorb the sound”.

They also complain about the prospect of traffic coming and going from the site any later and point out that, on occasion, music coming from the Palm House late at night is louder than their own televisions.

Greenbank ward Cllr Jan Clein also objected to the proposals.

But a report to be put before Liverpool Council’s planning committee on Tuesday recommends it should be approved.

It added fitting noise limiters to amplifiers in the venue should lessen disturbance to residents.

The report stated: “The head of planning acknowledges the objections of some residents with regard to noise produced from traffic due to Mossley Hill Drive being the main thoroughfare to and from the Palm House.

“However, it is considered that the proposal would not exacerbate traffic in the area because the proposal would not lead to an increased number of users.”
