Liverpool Women’s and Clatterbridge hospitals are MRSA superbug-free for a year

TWO Merseyside hospitals have been declared free of the MRSA superbug for a year.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology were among just 25 nationwide who had no cases of the potentially-deadly infection in the 12 months up to the end of June.

Official figures also showed that, across the region, cases totalled just 43, with no Mersey hospital hitting double figures.

A regional health monitor said that was a “fantastic achievement” given the tens of thousands of patients who pass through their doors every year.

But across the region and the country, cases of MRSA – which infects the bloodstream – are at a record low following an intensive hygiene blitz in all hospitals.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen hospitals saw five infections over the year.
