New memorial to World War One hero Noel Chavasse unveiled at Liverpool One

AROUND 100 people gathered to unveil a new memorial to World War One hero Noel Chavasse in the Liverpool city centre park which bears his name.

The unveiling was held on the 94th anniversary of the double Victoria Cross holder’s death and marked the formal re-dedication of the park, which now forms part of the Liverpool ONE development.

The ceremony was attended by cadets, serving and retired military personnel, and family members.

The memorial, designed by city architects K2, stands at eight metres long and two metres high, and includes engravings referring to the courage and self-sacrifice of the medical officer, who made Liverpool his adopted home.

His great-nephew, David Watson, travelled from Herefordshire to perform the unveiling ceremony.

A bugler played The Last Post, followed by a minute’s silence during the poignant ceremony.

The memorial is the second to be dedicated to Chavasse in the city, after one by the sculptor Tom Murphy was unveiled in Abercromby Square in 2008.
