TJ Hughes stores to close in Birkenhead, Widnes, St Helens and Chester with loss of 200 jobs

THE administrators of discount store chain TJ Hughes have announced that 22 stores will close in the next 10 days – including four in Merseyside and Cheshire.

Ernst & Young last night confirmed the TJ’s stores in Birkenhead, Widnes, St Helens and Chester would close with the loss of more than 200 jobs.

Earlier this week, the TJ Hughes name and four of its stores – including the flagship store in London Road – were sold to Anil Juneja, managing director of Speke-based wholesale and retail firm the Benross Group.

But the rest of the former TJ Hughes empire remained in the hands of administrators, who are looking for buyers for the remaining stores.

The latest closures include stores from Scotland to Somerset. More than 1,000 jobs will go across the UK.

The Birkenhead and Widnes stores, which between them employ 128 staff, will close on Thursday, August 11.

The stores in Chester and St Helens, which employ 86, will shut on the following Sunday.
