PROSPECTIVE cable thieves in Liverpool have been warned by British Transport Police: “We’re watching you.”
The call comes after a 24-year-old man was charged with theft of cable from Dunes Way depot.
Detective Inspector Andrea Rainey said: “Metal theft is one of the biggest challenges facing British Transport Police and the railway. It is certainly the crime which has the greatest potential impact on the running of the railway as the targeted cable is responsible for delivering the power and communications signals which keep trains moving.
“And it is not just the railway industry which feels the impact. The subsequent delays and cancellations mean hundreds, if not thousands, of people experience disrupted journeys.
Network Rail director Jo Kaye said: “In the three months to the end of June we had 26 cable theft incidents in Merseyside and Greater Manchester resulting in 50 trains being cancelled."
