Chester to become a ‘Responsible Drinking Zone’

CHESTER has become one of the first areas in the country to have a designated “Responsible Drinking Zone”.

Although it does not ban drinking alcohol, it provides police with additional powers to take drinks away from those “who are causing a nuisance or are suspected of being likely to cause a nuisance whilst drinking alcohol in public”.

The aim is to tackle alcohol-related crime in and around the Chester area.

Cheshire West and Chester councillor Jill Houlbrook, assistant executive member for community, said: “The Responsible Drinking Zone provides Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cheshire Police with a valuable power to make people surrender alcohol through a preventative, responsible manner with the aim of preventing one of the main causes of crime and disorder.”

Advisory signs are being placed in the designated zones.
