Prime Minister David Cameron shows support for second Mersey crossing on Daresbury visit

DAVID CAMERON yesterday pledged his support for the second Mersey Crossing – and approval for a funding package is now expected as early as next month.

Halton council has been anxiously waiting for months for a decision on how the £600m cost of the bridge will be met.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister raised the question of the bridge on a visit to Daresbury science campus.

“The Mersey crossing is going ahead,” Cameron said on his visit.

Yesterday, the Daily Post revealed that the flagship business park on the edge of Warrington is becoming the second “enterprise zone” in the region, allowing companies to enjoy tax breaks, fast-track planning rules, and ultra fast broadband.

The move is expected to create 1,000 jobs and the Government also announced it was investing £10m in the campus to enhance computational science and engineering, and accelerator science and technology.

Halton council leader Rob Polhill said: “Unprompted, the Prime Minister mentioned the bridge, so it’s definitely on his radar.

“We are hoping we will hear something in September or October.”

The six-lane bridge received planning permission before Christmas, clearing the way for Halton Borough Council to pursue land purchases and seek a private-sector partner to build and maintain it.
