Mersey MPs write to David Cameron to get Hillsborough Thatcher files released to the public

MERSEYSIDE’S MPs last night stepped up the pressure on Downing Street to release the Thatcher Hillsborough files.

Many put pen to paper to urge Prime Minister David Cameron to withdraw the Government’s objection to the files being made public as soon as possible.

Liverpool-born shadow education secretary Andy Burnham and a total of 10 Mersey MPs yesterday penned a letter to Number 10.

In the letter, they said: “In the 22 years since the tragedy, the Hillsborough families have faced countless obstacles, insults and setbacks as they have pursued their dignified campaigned for justice and the full truth.”

They explain how important the panel’s task is to the people of Liverpool and how withholding documents could undermine public confidence in the Government’s commitment to full disclosure.

It adds: “We wish to stress to you that this letter is not motivated by any party political considerations. We do not know what these documents will reveal. Our only motivation here is to fulfil promises made to the families who have suffered so much down the years to secure the full truth.

“We believe that this is shared by the many thousands of people who have signed the online petition calling for full disclosure over the course of today. Last year, when the Bloody Sunday Inquiry reported, we recall your courage and dignity in helping to heal the wounds of the people of Derry.

“We now ask you to do the same for the people of our city.”
