HUNDREDS of red carnations were thrown into the River Mersey as part of Slavery Remembrance Day.

Granby community chiefs led a traditional libation ceremony at the Albert Dock yesterday to remember the millions of slaves who died.

Traditional dance troupes, steel bands and youth groups processed from Granby to the Albert Dock before the ceremony began.

The Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Liverpool, council leader Joe Anderson and MP Louise Ellman attended the annual event, which has been commemorated in Liverpool since 1999.

Mr Anderson said: “It was right and fair and proper that Liverpool apologised and it is important we never forget.”

Amy de Joia, from National Museums Liverpool said: “The events go from strength to strength each year. They are an important and intrinsic part of the city’s culture.”
