Wirral’s Heritage Open Days programme starts

A SERIES of open days celebrating the best of Wirral’s history and heritage begins this weekend.

The Heritage Open Days, organised by Wirral History and Heritage Association and supported by Wirral Council, acknowledge and celebrate some of the area’s older buildings which people pass every day without a second glance.

The event also gives the public an opportunity to visit buildings which are not generally open to them or gain free access to properties usually charging admission.

Cllr Chris Meaden, cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure, said: “The Heritage Open Days provide visitors and residents with nine fantastic days of culture, history and heritage.

“From historic buildings and guided walks to places of worship and wonderful gardens, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

“I am incredibly proud of all those in the Wirral History and Heritage Association who have worked tirelessly to create this wide-ranging and interesting programme.”

Peter France, chairman of the Wirral History and Heritage Association, said: “This is a fabulous opportunity for the public to discover the heritage shaping where we live now and the lives of our forefathers. Whether it is lighthouses, places of worship or iconic buildings, they all reveal the footprints of the past.”

This year’s event runs from tomorrow to September 10 and covers historic public buildings, places of worship and guided walks, taking in some of Wirral’s most historic streets.
