SHADOW Home Secretary Yvette Cooper yesterday declared it was time to break myths about Toxteth after last month’s riots.
Ms Cooper visited community groups and top police officers yesterday in the wake of the riots.
She also celebrated the community spirit in the area.
“I think it is important people understand the reality behind some of the myths.”
She also used the visit to hit out at the Government’s plans for elected police commissioners, which she believes will be a waste of £112m at a time when Merseyside is losing 800 officers.
The community and local politicians believe the area received more attention than it deserved in last month’s riots because of the reputation Toxteth earned in the 1981 riots.
Ms Cooper met Merseyside Chief Constable Jon Murphy, councillors, and workers at the Tiber Project, in Lodge Lane.
