Huge Cunard ocean liner due to visit city today

ONE of the largest ocean liners in the world sails into Liverpool today to mark the finale of the city’s On the Waterfront festival.

The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is due to arrive in the city shortly before noon, with around 2,600 guests.

The stopover by the huge liner signals the end of the waterfront festival, which has seen 80,000 visitors flock to the Pier Head to enjoy free maritime activities.

A small fireworks display will mark the QM2’s departure and the end of the festival at 10pm tonight.

At 1,132 feet in length, QM2 is five times longer than Cunard’s first ship, Britannia, and is longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower and St Paul’s Cathedral. The 14-deck liner can play host to 2,620 guests and is home to 1,253 crew members. Its whistle is audible for 10 miles.

Cunard liner, the Queen Elizabeth, docked last week.
