THE chief curator of one of London’s most popular art galleries was appointed the Liverpool Biennial’s new artistic director.
Sally Tallant, the Serpentine Gallery’s head of programmes, will take up the post in November.
She will succeed Lewis Biggs, who has been with the Biennial as a board member and then as its director since its inception in 1998.
Tallant brings with her a wealth of experience and professional contacts as well as a reputation for high-quality programming and 15 years of experience of working with international artists.
She said: “Liverpool Biennial is a landmark project and as the UK’s Biennial it has become one of the best reviewed and attended arts events in Britain.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to lead it to the next stage of its development and build on its enormous successes to date.
“Liverpool Biennial 2012 will commission and present work from the world’s leading artists and I look forward to working with the board and staff to ensure that the next festival breaks new ground.”
Planning for next year’s city centre festival of contemporary art has been under way for some time.
However, the organisation says Tallant’s background will ensure it involves an integrated programme based on arts practice.
Paula Ridley, Liverpool Biennial chair, said: “We are thrilled Sally will be joining us.”
Liverpool Biennial 2012 will take place from September 15 to November 25.
