A PROTEST song aimed at boosting a campaign opposing plans by Tranmere Rovers to build on a memorial field has been posted on You Tube.
The song comes in the wake of moves by Tranmere to seek planning permission to build houses on its training ground Ingleborough Fields, near its Prenton Park ground.
This move has caused division between some local people and Tranmere fans after concerns were raised over the memorial status of the site.
The song, called The Fields of Prenton Park, invokes the memories of Tranmere legend Dixie Dean as well as the war poet Wilfred Owen, who is one of those the Ingleborough memorial is dedicated to.
But the song’s writer – a local musician – said he wishes to remain anonymous after receiving abusive comments and emails when he first uploaded it to the video-sharing website. The comments section has now been disabled.
He told the Daily Post: “It was disliked by quite a few people.
“I just feel it’s a cause worth writing a song for.
“I didn’t receive any direct threats – just comments about why they wish to sell the fields and how they will move the monument to a more suitable place.
“I have donated the song to the cause for them to use as they will.”
Tranmere acquired the Ingleborough Road site, formerly the school playing field for Birkenhead Institute, in 1994.
It includes a plaque in memory of the 88 old boys of the Institute killed during World War I. Since the plans became public competing petitions for and against the scheme have been set up.
However Tranmere Rovers Supporters Trust is backing the plan to build 100 homes on the six acres at Ingleborough Road, which is linked to a scheme to redevelop facilities at the Woodchurch Leisure Centre for use by the club and community.
