David Cameron apologises for Angela Eagle ‘calm down’ jibe

DAVID Cameron has finally said sorry for telling a female Mersey MP to “calm down, dear" – six months after his much-criticised taunt in the Commons.

But Angela Eagle, the Wallasey MP who was on the other end of the prime minister's jibe, immediately claimed the apology was phoney.

Labour's shadow Treasury chief secretary said Mr Cameron had failed to get in touch with her personally, to show contrition. And, pointing to growing evidence that women voters are turning away from the Conservatives, she added: "He's worried about his polling, he's not worried about me."

Mr Cameron triggered a furious row when, in April, he parroted the catchphrase made famous by film director Michael Winner in a TV advert.

The PM said: "If I offended anyone, I am hugely sorry. That is not what I wanted to do. It was a lighthearted reference. Catchphrases stick with me."
