Liverpool council bid to block Sefton Park bistro alcohol licence over ‘antisocial behaviour’ fears

Manager of the Aviary cafe Kade Ferraiolo

LIVERPOOL Council chiefs are attempting to stop an Italian bistro in Sefton park selling wine with its meals because they claim it would lead to a rise in anti-social behaviour.

The former Aviary cafe, in Sefton Park, was bought and refurbished by local businessman Gino Ferraiolo. It would be the first licensed premises in any of the city’s parks.

The council’s parks manager is attempting to block the licence, saying “it is likely that under-age drinkers or their friends will be attracted to purchase alcohol as this location is out of sight from passers-by”.

Parks boss Paul Scragg said there had been 212 complaints to the council about anti-social behaviour, property damage and graffiti in the park.

Mr Scragg added: “The licensed activities requested will attract larger groups and smaller numbers of people into the middle of the park late into the evening. This is likely to lead to increased occurrence of mugging, etc, on people taking shortcuts on footpaths that are not well-lit late at night.”
