Doctor’s children run Liverpool marathon in his name

THE children of a popular family doctor will join Liverpool’s runners in the marathon on Sunday.

Keen runner Dr Bill Mackean will be remembered when Susie, William, Lizzie, John and Rob take to the starting line in a bid to raise £5,000 for the Marie Curie hospice in Woolton.

Dr Mackean ran seven marathons, five of them in Liverpool, and ran for the Liverpool Harriers, clocking a personal best of three hours and 24 minutes.

Along the way he raised thousands of pounds for the British Lung Foundation, while practising as a GP in Everton and Kirkdale.

His daughter Susie said: “We found out when dad was ill last summer that the Liverpool marathon was being organised again.

“He was delighted that 'our' marathon was to be revived and would have been thrilled at the thought of us all taking part, although only my brother Rob has run the distance before.

“It seemed the ideal way to show our gratitude and love for him.”
