Liverpool’s comic talent immortalised in new artwork

KEN DODD was among more than 30 Liverpudlian comedians and comic writers to be immortalised in a new artwork.

The Comedy Carpet, at the foot of the iconic Blackpool Tower, is one of the largest pieces of public art ever commissioned in the UK. It was created by the artist Gordon Young.

Ken Dodd, who takes pride of place as one of six comedy greats featured at the heart of the artwork, unveiled the piece.

Among the fellow Liverpudlians included are Arthur Askey, Jean Boht, Eddie Braben, Faith Brown, Billy Dainty, Les Dennis, Tommy Handley, Carla Lane, Derek Nimmo, Paul O'Grady, Leonard Rossiter, Alexei Sayle, Peter Serafinowicz, Freddie Starr, Jimmy Tarbuck and Norman Vaughan.

The artwork features material such as catchphrases, jokes, and lyrics, all made from 160,000 red and black granite, and blue concrete, letters.
