DOUBTS over the future leadership of Wirral council continue to intensify after the Liberal Democrats called for an all-party cabinet.
The move is likely to upset Labour as it echoes demands from the Conservatives who had already submitted a motion to full council also calling for leader Steve Foulkes to be removed.
When the council meets next Monday, the Lib-Dems, who hold the balance of power on the hung council, will have a choice between supporting the existing Labour minority leadership or allowing the Tories to take control.
In his notice to the council Lib-Dem leader, Cllr Tom Harney says “a ‘business as usual approach’ will simply not do and that a radical and politically brave solution is needed”. He has called for “an emergency All Party Unity Cabinet” to be set up to deal with the “corporate governance crisis” engulfing the council in the wake of Anna Klonowski’s report into how former employee and whistleblower Martin Morton’s case was handled.
Cllr Harney said this was the most important issue facing the authority, and added: “We are looking at ways of working together.”
Negotiations have been taking place behind the scenes and today party leaders and deputies are due to meet Ms Klonowski for a briefing on her report.
