A BRONZE statue of St Helens rugby legend Kieron Cunningham has been unveiled outside the new Saints stadium.

Former St Helens skipper Keiron Cunningham will now take pride of place outside the new ground on Peasley Cross Lane.

The new 18,000-seater arena is due to be completed later this month by developers Langtree.

Cunningham, often referred to as “The King” by adoring Saints fans, was chosen in a poll of supporters to be cast as a statue outside the new ground, with over 10,000 people voting for him.

The project was commissioned by St Helens Council and garnered the single biggest ever response to a consultation.

Cunningham pipped Tom van Vollenhoven with 8,820 votes, followed by former Man of Steel Paul Wellens with 1,501, Alex Murphy on 1,284, Alf Ellaby on 249 and Vinty Karalius on 203. Š

The creation had been housed on Chalon Way, in the town, awaiting completion of the stadium.
