Sefton Council’s strategy to tackle severe weather revealed

SEFTON Council has revealed its weapons against severe winter weather this year.

The authority, blasted for its “slow” reaction to people being left stranded by snow and ice last January, hopes its revised strategy will avoid a repeat of the chaos.

This includes: operating 10 gritting lorries on roads; operating three smaller gritters on pavements in built up areas; fitting snow plough blades to gritters; updating gritting routes so remote areas are not overlooked; buying more salt; providing 300 new snow shovels; storing 2,000 extra bags of grit in the borough; relocating council staff away from their “primary functions” to tackle emerging snow problems; communicating updates through social network site Twitter.

Council network manager Jerry McConkey, who oversees winter policy, said: “We are now better prepared. We are the guardians of the taxpayers’ money, and we’ve used the money wisely.”
