Liverpool MP Steve Rotheram put on culture select committee to grill former Sun editor Mackenzie

LIVERPOOL MP Steve Rotheram will be given the chance to interrogate ex-Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie over the paper’s “lies” about the Hillsborough disaster.

Mr Rotheram has been selected to sit on the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee, to which Mr MacKenzie has been invited to give evidence about the Sun’s coverage of the tragedy in which 96 fans died.

Mr Rotheram, who was at the FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield in 1989, witnessed the disaster first hand.

He said he would be glad of the opportunity to question the former editor if he would be willing to attend.

Mr Rotheram, who was informed of his placement by the Labour chief whip, said he was looking forward to the challenge, and hoped Mr MacKenzie would attend.

He added: “I’ve got the train of thought that because his ego is so massive maybe he will go ‘Yes, I will go toe to toe with these on this’.

“Or he may do the chicken run and say he is not bothering.

“He keeps on shifting his position.

“We would just be satisfied if he would just tell the truth.

“I’m not saying people will automatically fall in line with him, but he needs to come clean.”

In the aftermath of the tragedy on April 15, 1989, The Sun printed stories, under the headline of “The Truth”, that Liverpool fans picked the pockets of the dead, urinated on the police and attacked one PC giving the kiss of life to an injured fan. The claims were roundly discredited and not a scrap of proof has ever been put forward for them.
