Oppostion to Chester £3m revamp proposal

LABOUR councillors said they will campaign against a £3m refurbishment plan for an area around Chester’s cathedral.

Saying they are responding to the “overwhelming opposition” to the scheme from local people, the Cheshire West and Chester Labour Group is now calling on the council to stop the project.

Cllr Ben Powell, Labour’s regeneration spokesperson, said: “The fundamental issue is: how does spending more than £3m contribute to the economic viability of Chester and the wider borough? We would argue that there is no evidence that it will.”

When the scheme was unveiled last month Cllr Herbert Manley, executive member for regeneration, said the authority had “listened carefully to what the public had to say”.

The closing date is October 25.
