Sladen, who was born in Liverpool in 1948, grew up around Sefton Park.

Elisabeth Sladen – The Autobiography will be available for to buy on November 7 and will feature the story of the actress’s post-World War Two childhood through to her starring role on The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Publisher Aurum Press, which postponed the release of the book after her death, described it as “funny, ridiculous, insightful and an entertaining and fitting tribute to a woman who will be sadly missed by millions”.

Sladen first appeared as Sarah Jane in 1973 alongside the third Doctor Jon Pertwee, followed by Liverpool actor Tom Baker.

More recently she revived the role with Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith.

Tennant has written a foreword for the book.
