South Yorkshire Police briefing papers on Hillsborough tragedy given to independent panel

HOME Secretary Teresa May has confirmed that vital briefing papers sent by South Yorkshire Police to No 10 in 1989 have been given to the Hillsborough Independent Panel.

The move could be crucial in tracking who was responsible for The Sun newspapers’s subsequent slurs on Liverpool FC fans.

Last week’s House of Commons debate focused on Cabinet documents from the time.

But Birkenhead MP Frank Field (right) specifically asked whether the police briefs would be included in the Government’s promise of full disclosure.

Mrs May replied that “all Government papers have been made available, in full and uncensored” to the panel.

Mr Field told the Daily Post last night: “We should now learn where this poison started.

“The Home Secretary’s response will be very welcome news to the families.

“She has stated categorically that all Government papers, not just Cabinet minutes, have been made available, including those papers submitted by South Yorkshire Police.

“So in the light of day, we shall know who actively put forward the slurs.”

Government papers are expected to be shared with the Hillsborough families first and then released to the wider public as part of a comprehensive, and independent, report.

But it is not clear when that will happen because the panel must research thousands of documents and other materials relating to the tragedy.
