A DEVASTATING report published today warns that ongoing cutbacks will “store up serious social and economic problems for the future.”
The inquiry by the communities and local government select committee focused on the cancellation of housing market renewal Pathfinder funding, which has helped renew run- down housing across Merseyside and other cities.
The MPs found private sector investment meant to plug the gap has dried up, leaving schemes uncompleted and falling into dereliction.
Core regeneration cash is being halved in the current financial year, with a 65% reduction planned over the two years.
Ros Green, the community representative of such a scheme in Anfield, said it was “criminal” that £60m of public money spent so far was being written off.
“We need to think what my people are living in and the conditions they are living in,” she told the committee.
“We have kids in schools, you ask them to draw a house and they show you a house with boarded-up windows, not fancy little curtains.
