Liverpool council £50m budget cuts options to be announced today

St George's Hall

LIVERPOOL council will today announce the series of painful options for cutting £50m from next year’s budget.

Staff have been invited to a briefing at St George’s Hall this morning, and the full extent of the measures being considered will be revealed later in the day.

It is understood that initially £90m of cuts would be put forward, but it may now be closer to £75m.

Council leader Joe Anderson said: “Yes it is tough out there as people will see on Monday when we announce the options.

“But what we are not doing is listening to those that would like us to set an illegal budget.”

It is the first time, the public will be involved in the process of deciding where the axe falls.

The council hopes that by involving the public and setting out various options, the electorate will see the “impossible” task it faces.

Last month the city held the first public consultation event with the public, but it descended into bitter fighting.
