Derek Hatton play pulled from Playhouse Theatre’s Everyword festival of new writing

A WORK-in-progress about former Liverpool City Council deputy leader Derek Hatton will no longer form part of the Everyman and Playhouse’s festival of new writing.

Grotesque Chaos by Michael McLean was due to be performed on November 17 with its single role taken by Withnail and I actor Paul McGann.

However, the theatre management has decided to take the play behind closed doors as “too much public attention focusing only on the characters involved could be to the detriment of its overall development”.

A spokesman said: “This is clearly a hot topic and has already attracted a lot of interest.

“We want the writer, director and actors to feel at total liberty to research and develop this piece without fear of sensationalism.”

The 35 people who had booked tickets to the Everyword production in the 60-seater Playhouse Studio have been contacted about the programme change.
