Man arrested over death of train tragedy teenager Georgia Varley

A WIRRAL man was arrested over the death of Georgia Varley, the schoolgirl tragically killed at James Street railway station.

The 44-year-old male, who works for Merseyrail, was interviewed under police caution on Thursday evening and into Friday morning.

He was released pending further investigations and has been suspended from his post at Merseyrail.

Georgia was killed on Saturday October 22 while she was on a night out with friends.

A large group had left an 18th birthday party in Hoylake and were heading into town to continue the celebrations.

Friend Beccy Smith recalled Georgia walking up and down the carriage of their Wirral line train talking to people.

She said: “Georgia had so many friends, she knew almost everyone on that train.

“She was the most popular girl I know.”

It is thought there was confusion about which station to get off at and Georgia stepped off at James Street.

One of Georgia’s friends, Kellie Sinnett, was on the train with her.

Kellie said she saw the 16-year-old bend down to put on her shoes, which she had taken off on the train, but when she stood up the doors had closed.

She said: “Someone was speaking to Georgia through the window and telling her to stand back, that we would come back for her.

“She was running down the platform as the train started to move, then the emergency brake went on.

“There was an announcement on the tannoy saying ‘stay calm, we have hit someone’.”

CCTV footage showed Georgia leaning against the train near the doors, just before it pulled away.

Georgia was buried in Bootle cemetery last week.

Around 400 people turned out to say goodbye at her funeral, which her father, Paul, described as “overwhelming”. On Friday he and partner Amber said they would spend the weekend in North Wales with Georgia’s grandmother, Joyce, where they planned to bury some of her belongings.

Joyce said: “The last time she came to see us it was a lovely day so we got a dingy out for the pond.

“Georgia was there floating around in it. She was so relaxed, I think she was wearing her pyjamas.”

She added: “There’s no mobile signal where I live and it will be good for Paul and Amber to have a break. Their phones haven’t stopped ringing.”

Merseyrail confirmed a member of staff had been interviewed by police and suspended.
