Lance Corporal Peter Eustace from Dingle, Liverpool, killed in Afghanistan

A LIVERPOOL soldier described as the “bedrock” of his platoon has been killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal Peter Eustace, 25, from 2nd Battalion The Rifles died on Wednesday in the Nahr-e Saraj area of Helmand province.

The former painter and decorator was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) while conducting a joint patrol with his Company and the Afghan National Army.

As news of the story broke last night, friends and family gathered at the home of L/Cpl Eustace’s mother, Carol, in Dingle.

At the door, the soldier’s grandfather, John Horan, told how the family was devastated by the news.

He said: “It’s too soon to say anything more yet, we’re still trying to come to terms with what happened to Peter.”

A statement released by Carol, sister Kirsty, brother Ryan, and girlfriend Aimi said: “Peter was very fit and he always wanted to join the Army, he was committed to carrying out a full career there.

“He will be missed by his family and friends and is loved by all.

“Peter was a loving son and grandson and will be especially missed by his girlfriend, Aimi. He will also be missed by loving dog Macey.”
