Rushworths music empire in Liverpool University three year research project

Rushworths study project

IT’S name is synonymous with music in Liverpool and especially with Merseybeat, and now family music business Rushworth’s is to be the subject of a major study by Liverpool University.

From 1828 to 2002, five generations took the Rushworth name from strength to strength as far afield as the exotic coasts of Brazil, Egypt and West Africa.

Jonathan Rushworth, the great, great grandson of the man who started the music empire, is now appealing to anybody who has a story to tell, to come forward.

He has joined forces with the University of Liverpool for a three- year research project which will lay bare the history of the firm.

Mr Rushworth said: “Rushworth’s played an important role in the city’s social and cultural history. I am sure that there are many people who have memories of the music premises in Whitechapel and Islington or the organ building side of the business.

“Many people may also have experience of the programmes and initiatives which Rushworth’s organised to support and encourage music in the city.”
