BAGGAGE handlers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport will stage a walk-out in a row over compulsory redundancies today.

Ground staff who work for the company Servisair will strike for two hours between 5am-7am, with another protest at 7pm-9pm.

Airport bosses last night played down fears of travel chaos for passengers, insisting contingency plans were in place.

An 85% majority of Servisair staff at JLA voted in favour of the walk-out after 47 compulsory redundancies were announced at the firm’s Runcorn base.

The GMB union said strikes were also planned for Friday, Sunday and Monday, and may be repeated into December.

Servisair deals with Ryanair, KLM, FlyBe and Hungarian airline WizzAir. The firm said it would draft in extra staff to prevent lengthy delays for passengers.

JLA spokesman Robin Tudor said: “Unless advised otherwise by the airline or tour operator, passengers are advised to check in as normal.”
