Steam-powered hearse
A STEAM engine enthusiast was taken to his final resting place behind the engine he used to ride to entertain children.
David Letsch, a conservator at the National Museums Liverpool, was just 57 when he died of cancer earlier this month.
Mr Letsch, from Clubmoor, said one of his final wishes was to be taken to the crematorium behind a Burrell Steam engine.
Yesterday, his father also laid a “steam engine” floral tribute at the service at Anfield Crematorium.
David Fleming, director of National Museums Liverpool, said: “Dave was a valued member of the National Museums Liverpool team for more than 25 years as a conservator of the Land Transport collection.
“We were very saddened to hear the news he had passed away.
“Dave always had a great passion for the collection, especially the Lion steam locomotive, which he helped conserve for display at the new Museum of Liverpool, and the Burrell Traction Engine. We are honoured that Burrell could play a part in celebrating his life.”
Before the funeral, Mr Letsch’s widow, Sandra, said: “I am so honoured and proud that the museum allowed it because it shows the great respect they held for him.”
