FRACKING protesters have stormed a controversial gas rig near Southport for the second time in a month.

Demonstrators from a green action group calling itself Rising Tide climbed on to the drilling platform, in Banks, early yesterday morning.

They are opposed to the method of extracting gas known as “fracking”, or hydraulic fracturing, which green groups say is damaging to the environment.

An independent scientific report released last month said fracking was probably the cause of earth tremors in the local area around the Lancashire drilling rig. The firm that runs the rig, Cuadrilla Resources, has claimed using the new methods could create thousands of new jobs and ease gas supply worries.

The demonstrators say they intend to occupy the site for several days.
