Daughter of Knowsley MP George Howarth died of complications from diabetes, inquest told

THE 24-year-old daughter of a Labour MP died in her London flat of complications from her diabetes.

Sian Howarth, whose father is George Howarth, MP for Knowsley North and Sefton East, was found by her flatmate on September 27, after passing away in her sleep, Westminster Coroner’s Court was told.

The inquest heard Sian, a teacher, had struggled to come to terms with her Type One diabetes.

As a teenager, she had not kept up with her medication and had missed appointments with doctors and dieticians, suffering from depression as a result of the condition. She had also developed neuropathy, which is damage to the nerves caused by diabetes.

But as she grew up, she had come to terms with her condition, and had even become a trustee of a charity supporting those with diabulimia, which helps those with diabetes who also have eating disorders.

A post mortem showed no clear sign of a cause of death, leading pathologist, Professor Sebastian Lucas to record a cause of diabetic dead in bed syndrome, an unexplained killer among young people with Type One diabetes.

Coroner Dr Fiona Wilcox recorded a verdict of natural causes.
