EIGHT young writers were last night named as finalists in a leading literary competition for young people on Merseyside and the surrounding area.

The 10th anniversary of the Liverpool Athenaeum Writer-in-Residence prize was marked with a record number of entries representing 23 schools.

The 61 boys and girls, aged between 16 and 19, wrote essays and short stories of up to 1,500 words on subjects of their own choosing.

These were judged by Frank Moran and Ian Cubbin of the Athenaeum, Daily Post columnist David Charters and Roger Phillips of Radio Merseyside.

The eight finalists are Sean Cunningham, of St Francis Xavier School, Liverpool; Lauren Davey, of Belvedere Academy, Liverpool; Rebecca Hulse, of Oldershaw Academy, Wallasey; Emma Louise Keegan, of St Julie’s High School, Liverpool;

James Kelly, formerly of the Halewood Centre of Learning; and Laura Jane Rimmer, Olivia Sung and Meta Wright, all of the Liverpool Blue Coat School.

All entrants will receive a certificate of merit.
