A WIRRAL sports centre famous for being the location for the film Chariots of Fire’ is set to become the new site for sport science study for a local college.

Wirral Council agreed to lease half an acre of land at the Oval, in Bebington, to Wirral Metropolitan College to build permanent classrooms there.

The move will allow up to 150 students to study at the centre and forms part of Wirral Met’s relocation from its Carlett Park campus.

A spokeswoman for Wirral Met said they were looking to provide “something more permanent” at the site which currently has some mobile classrooms which are nearing the end of their useful life.

She said: “We are looking at the sale of Carlett Park and to reinvest financing from that and add from reserves and improve Conway Park, 12 Quays and the Oval.”

According to a council report the college is now applying for funding from the government, with two separate schemes proposed. One involves new accommodation at the Oval, comprising 1,250 sq metres plus refurbishment works at Wirral Met’s Twelve Quays and Conway Park sites.

However, the college has also applied for a smaller scheme which would see a smaller development at the Oval.
