Council leader Joe Anderson in ‘assault’ row

LIVERPOOL council leader Joe Anderson last night stood by his claim that he had been punched and kicked on his way into a council meeting – after protesters claimed it didn’t happen.

Cllr Anderson was on his way into the Town Hall on Monday night when he said he had “Nazi scum” screamed into his face, and he was kicked in the legs from behind and punched in the side.

The meeting saw £30m of cuts made to the council budget. But several protesters disagreed with Cllr Anderson’s account.

Cameron Dineen, 19, from Liverpool, said: "Joe Anderson is using claims of assault as a diversion to the fact that members of the public were refused access to a council meeting which was supposed to be transparent and in order to discuss a budget which was supposedly in the public's best interest."

Others claimed “Nazi scum” had been shouted at a member of the English Defence League, not at Cllr Anderson.

But the council leader said: “A woman shouted it right into my face, it was aimed at me.”
