THESE images show what a revamped Liverpool Central station will look like after undergoing a major £20m makeover.

The pictures show the new concourse area at the busiest station on the Merseyrail network.

Work is due to get under way on the flagship station next April – just days after the Grand National meeting and events being held in the city to mark the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic.

The long-awaited refurbishment is intended to improve access and passenger-flow and make Liverpool Central safer. The station will not be fully re-opened for six months.

It is part of a wider £40m-plus overhaul of Merseyrail’s five underground stations pencilled in over the next few years.

Central Station plan

The work at Liverpool Central is the biggest single element and likely to cause the most disruption to passengers – in particular the closure of the Northern Line platform.

Last year, more than 18m people passed through the often-cramped three-platform station – the busiest underground outside London.

Work will start on the Northern Line platforms, which will be closed from April 23 to October 21.

The Wirral Line platforms will close on the same date but re-open on August 24.

Train services will operate as normal but will pass through the station without stopping.

The upgrade of the station includes the full refurbishment of the concourse area with natural light flowing through a glazed roof and “glass walls”.

There will also be an additional lift, new escalators to the Northern Line, larger platforms and improved toilet facilities.
