PATIENTS continue to be stuck in hospitals across Merseyside for months unnecessarily because the correct community care is not available for them.
A Freedom of Information request by the Daily Post asked hospitals how many days they had lost because of “bed blocking”.
The longest individual case was 308 days at the mental health trust 5 Boroughs Partnership.
The trust, which provides care in Knowsley, St Helens, Halton and Warrington, lost 6,187 bed days in total during the past year due to bed blocking – more than five years of bed time.
Elderly patients suffering from conditions like dementia are often stuck in hospitals because the correct care packages are not available for them in the community.
Many trusts have improved since the Daily Post checked on the problem one year ago.
Then we revealed one case of a six-year delay in a hospital for a patient at 5 Boroughs Partnership.
