Wirral Council social services care failings highlighted in long-awaited report

A CATALOGUE of shocking social services care failings have been revealed by a long-awaited report into Wirral Council.

The 240-page inquiry was prompted by the claims of a former council employee forced out of his job for whistleblowing.

The report by external consultant Anna Klonowski backs up claims that vulnerable people in council care had faced financial abuse and highlights further allegations by the former social services worker Martin Morton.

Mr Morton said last night he was pleased the report showed his whistleblowing had been justified.

The report accuses the council of failing to protect people it was responsible for and focusing on “reduction of cost”.

According to the report, other concerns Mr Morton raised included:

the rape of a vulnerable adult in Wirral Council care which was not properly investigated

a gang of men armed with baseball bats arriving to collect money from the manager of a care home

poor recruitment procedures which allowed the employment of a member of staff who had a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon.

The report is kept anonymous and some allegations have been disputed by those involved.
