A POSSIBLE merger between Liverpool University and Lancaster University is a step closer.
A report by Liverpool University, at the end of last year, warned that it could go "into decline" unless it enters into a major collaboration with Lancaster.
It stated that the move would enhance research, student experience and international standing.
Yesterday, Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool University, Professor Sir Howard Newby, told staff in a memo the councils of each university met on Wednesday to discuss the possible collaboration between the two establishments.
They have agreed to set up a joint strategy group to oversee the relationship between the two institutions.
Three project groups reporting to a joint planning group will also be established to examine the benefits of a collaboration.
Possible areas that the universities could work together include a joint research board, a joint graduate school and integrated international activity.
It is hoped a decision on the way forward will be reached by September this year.
