Liverpool Liberal Democrats call for anti-mayor campaign

THE LIBERAL Democrats have called for a cross party campaign against a directly elected mayor for Liverpool.

Leader Paula Keaveney has written to all three other party leaders on the council to suggest they join forces.

The city is due to have a referendum on a directly elected mayor in May.

Cllr Keaveney said it was now clear that no additional powers would be handed to the city if it votes for a mayor and as such all parties should campaign against the idea.

She also called for the creation of a Merseyside Constitutional Convention to consider how democracy and transparency can be brought to bear on issues across the region.

In her letter she said: “We have always maintained that constitutional issues must be dealt with on an all-party basis and would be pleased to work with all or any of you in looking at these issues.”

Council leader Joe Anderson was not available for comment but has previously said he would only back an elected mayor if it included the devolution of powers.
