VIDEO: Police close off Liverpool city centre roads and evacuate buildings after gas leak

UPDATE at 5.25pm

All city centre roads have re-opened and the safety cordon is now only covering the Lewis's building itself.

Trains are stopping at Central Station again and the NHS walk-in centre in Great Charlotte Street is planning to re-open at around 6pm, resuming its normal hours and staying opening until 10pm this evening.

Bus operators are returning to original routes but Merseytravel warns some residual delays are expected.

A GAS leak in Liverpool city centre has led police to close off a number of roads and evacuate buildings around the former Lewis’s department store in Renshaw Street.

The leak has also affected rail services, with no trains on the Wirral Line or Northern Line calling at Liverpool Central station until further notice.

National Grid said the leak was from a gas supply pipe running under the pavement.

A spokeswoman said the pipe was damaged after building rubble was sent down a chute by contractors working on the roof of the Lewis's building.
