LIVERPOOL council has officially agreed to keep four Sure Start centres open bringing joy to parents in the city.
The ruling Labour cabinet confirmed four centres, in Allerton and Hunts Cross, Childwall, Mossley Hill and West Derby would survive yesterday.
They were earmarked for closure as part of plans to save more than £90m when government spending cuts were announced.
But after parents and staff mounted large-scale campaigns, the council decided to keep them running.
Council leader Cllr Joe Anderson paid tribute to the campaigners, adding: “It was an honour to work with all of you and the campaign was a credit to you all.”
Parent Anita Eagan told yesterday’s meeting: “We know there are still some troubled waters ahead with job losses, but, on behalf of all parents at all four centres, I can say we are absolutely delighted we still have the service.”
