2,000 Merseyside families threatened with losing homes

ALMOST 2,000 Merseyside families were threatened with losing their homes between January and September last year.

Figures released by the ministry of justice showed how 1,955 possession claims were made to the courts by landlords and mortgage lenders.

In the same period the courts issued 1,466 court orders which paved the way for families to have their homes taken.

The housing charity Shelter said rising unemployment and increased pressure on household budgets led to more borrowers falling behind on their mortgages.

The figures showed Knowsley had eviction risk rates more than one-and-a-half times the national average.

There were 430 repossession claims made at Liverpool civil and family court between July and September 2011, with 285 orders granted – a 32% rise on the same time in 2010.
